The Peterswald "Bildchen" is located in the middle of the forest between Peterswald and Altlay, around four kilometres from the village. The chapel, also known as "Das Bildchen", was discovered in the 18th century by a young man named Mathias. He found an image of the Virgin Mary in a tree trunk in the place where the chapel stands today. Mathias tried to move the image to a more accessible location, but always found it back in its original place. After a dream in which he was told "Mathias build", Mathias decided to build a chapel around the tree with the image of the Virgin Mary. Over time, the "holy house" was in need of renovation, but the community greatly appreciated this place of prayer. A new, larger chapel was therefore built in the same place in 1858. Today's forest chapel houses a baroque altar of the Virgin Mary, which used to stand in the parish church of Peterswald. The Pieta inside is a replica; the original statue of the Madonna can be found in the Diocesan Museum in Trier. The chapel is a symbol of the solidarity of the Hunsrück inhabitants and the deep faith of the time. It is regularly visited by pilgrims, especially on 1 May and Ascension Day.
