Narrow paths over slate, great views and brook valleys are the highlights of this leg of the Saar-Hunsrück Climb.
The leg starts spectacularly, passing through “Altlayer Schweiz” to Hitzelbachtal and Altlayer Bachtal. The route mostly passes on narrow paths via rock formations with fantastic views of Hitselbachtal and then across to Altlayer Bachtal. On the incline to Peterswald we see a hermitage. Before and after the K51 crossing we experience spectacular panoramic views before the route goes into the wild, romantic Peterswalder Bachtal. In the lonely stream valleys there are bizarre slate rock formations. The route rises continuously to Shauren. We cross the B421 and follow the path through an agricultural landscape that offers many views to Blankenrath.
Sure-footedness and a good level of fitness are essential prerequisites for walking this premium long-distance hiking trail.
The Saar-Hunsrück Climb is a natural path that is on soft forest floor, grass paths or alongside streams for 65% of its route. But this special quality can result in problems after long periods of rain, making parts of the route difficult to walk. We therefore recommend wearing sturdy shoes.

with the combination of varied rock formations, quaint woods, spectacular views and narrow paths when descending to the wild, romantic Hitzelbach.
Peterswald hermitage
Located in the middle of the wood, it is the destination for penitential processions on 1st May and Ascension Day. There is a Baroque altar to Mary inside and a wooden pulpit in front.
Blankenrath
The Blankenrath staging post has its origins in the 9th and 10th century. In the centre there are some semi-timbered buildings and the parish church, which was built in 1761, with a Roman tower from the previous church.
