A somewhat challenging circular hike to the St Rochus Chapel with its stunning views.
This somewhat challenging hike begins in the Nittel "mountain landscape" from the centre of the village in the direction of the "Wiesengraben" development area. After a somewhat steep ascent, you reach the vineyards, which accompany you for a short while. Now you walk uphill through the forest to the "Kölliger Fels", where you then pass through the district of Köllig and occasionally walk along the Moselsteig Trail in the forest. At the end of the forest, the tour continues through the vineyards and in the distance you can already see the imposing "St Roch's Chapel" in the Köllig vineyards. The chapel, first mentioned in a document in 1432, is open to visitors on Sundays and public holidays. The route continues steeply downhill through the Nittel vineyards back to the village.
The trail with the blue markings starts at the village square and leads via the streets "Pflanzgarten" and "Auf dem Wiesengraben" to the cemetery. There it turns right and runs along the vineyards in the direction of Rehlingen before turning left into the forest at the signpost for the Elbling arbour and then leading along the edge of the forest with magical views of the Luxembourg side of the Moselle. After a while, it turns sharply left into a cosy forest path and then climbs uphill in the forest until a beautiful view of the district of Köllig opens up from the ridge. From there, the trail descends again to the left into the enchanting, overgrown forest below the spectacular Kölliger Fels natural monument. On reaching the edge of the forest, the trail follows the route of the Moselsteig Trail to the left and runs along the edge of the meadow until it reaches the forest again on a wider track. After a short while, it turns right into a hollow path in the direction of the Broudermännchesbur fountain, which was created by the so-called Nitteler Jungrentnern and turned into a nice resting place with a table and benches and a magnificent view of the valley. The story behind the fountain ("Bur" in Mosel-Franconian) is told on an information board next to the fountain.
From there, the route climbs steeply uphill to the Rochus Chapel with another magnificent view over Nittel and the neighbouring village of Machtum on the other side of the Moselle. After a short rest and a visit to the chapel if you wish, the route follows the Nitteler Kreuzweg back to the cemetery and then back to the village square along the familiar roads. The trail runs on a variety of surfaces, from tarmac farm tracks and country lanes to small forest and meadow paths. On the section below the Kölliger Fels, there are some notable inclines and this section can be very slippery after rainfall. In any case, sturdy footwear, hiking poles and long trousers are recommended due to the risk of ticks when walking through tall grass. The hike is signposted throughout with the "N4" markings.
Sturdy shoes!
